Moxa Therapy

If it turns out that the baby is breech at 32 weeks, you can use Moxatherapy to increase the chance of the baby turning spontaneously. There is then a 75% chance that the baby will turn to a head position. Moxatherapy is part of acupuncture and Traditional Chinese medicine. If the baby does not turn after this therapy, an external version (rotation) can still be performed in the hospital, around 36 weeks.

Moxa Therapy

Breech presentation

About 96% of all babies are in a cephalic position by the end of pregnancy, 0.5% adopt a transverse position and 3.5% are in a breech position.

What is Moxa therapy?

A Moxa stick is a stick made from mugwort herb (Artemisa Vulgaris). You light this and it will glow. You move this above a specific acupuncture point, namely your little toe. It provides a heat radiation that is very pleasant and not painful at all. This encourages the baby to move vigorously and eventually turn naturally. We use the smoke-less variant, which works just as well, but emits less smoke and odor. The baby can of course also turn spontaneously, but with Moxa therapy the chance increases.

Scientific research on the use of Moxa in breech presentation

Dr. clinical epidemiology Ineke van den Berg received her PhD from Erasmus University in 2010 for research into, among other things, the use of Moxa in breech presentation. Based on 6 studies, she notes that 66% of babies lie in the head position after Moxa therapy, compared to 34% who did not undergo therapy.

How does it work?

During a consultation at the practice, Marijke van der Kemp will treat you for the first time and we will explain exactly how you can apply Moxa yourself afterwards. If necessary, take your partner with you so that he or she can treat you with Moxa at home. You are supposed to apply the Moxa treatment 3-5 times a week, treating each toe for 10 minutes. In principle, you can continue with the Moxa treatment for 2 weeks.

Costs

The costs are €36 for a 20-minute treatment including 3 Moxa sticks.

Appointment
